While her life was lost, her dreams lived on to change a country. A storm held the team captive 72 meters below the summit, and Pasang Lhamu Sherpa died. As the team descended the mountain, tragedy struck. She conquered the mountain and fulfilled her dream. Climbing with a team of five other Sherpas, Pasang Lhamu reached Mount Everest's summit. Pasang Lhamu watched foreign women come to her mountain. Over the years, these tourists brought secrets of their own, introducing the people of Nepal to the cultures that were prevalent throughout the world. In 1953, after the first successful trek to the summit of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, more tourists came to the mountain to learn its secrets and to conquer its challenges. However, Pasang Lhamu believed that life could offer more opportunities for her and the other women of Nepal. She was allowed to join her father on short expeditions up the mountain, and she worked in kitchens at some of the base camps at the mountain's lower elevations.
